Read Music the TRAD Way – A Sneak Peek!

I am excited to give you a sneak peek into my new course, Read Music the TRAD way.

Discover how you can master music reading in a few easy steps using this proven method that I have created with Irish traditional musicians in mind.

Maybe you have shied away from learning to read music, thinking that it’s too complicated. Or, perhaps you did try before, but couldn’t connect what you were learning with the traditional music you were wanting to play. Trust me – I get it!

That’s why this course is going to change everything for you.

It is designed BY a traditional musician FOR traditional musicians. Why? Because I am a fiddle player and, for me, learning to read music was difficult, took forever, and involved a whole detour into classical music. All I wanted was something simple and straightforward – something that spoke my language. But it didn’t exist. So now I’ve created it. So that you can master this valuable skill, really quickly and really easily!

Here’s what is involved.

4 simple steps.

Step 1: Form & Structure

Look at a tune on the printed page and be able to recognise parts, phrases, repeats and so on. You’ll be able to confidently explain how a tune works – what’s on the page (plus all the hidden code that’s not even there in black and white).

Step 2: Read the Rhythm

So many people crumble when it comes to reading the rhythm of tunes. That’s why, using this method, we tackle the rhythm early on. Did you know that there are, in fact, only a small number of rhythmic patterns that crop up in traditional dance tunes? And the good news is, I’ve done the hard work for you, and gathered together those patterns that you are likely to come across in traditional tunes. I’ll teach you a simple technique – Tap, Clap, Say and Play – to get you reading (and playing!) those rhythms off the page in no time at all.

Step 3: Read the Pitches

This is the longest step. But the great news is that, once you master the pitches, they will stay the same for every tune that you will meet – ever! So, it’s worth the time and effort! We’ll work through all of the pitches, using lots of drills and exercises, so that you can read and play as you go.

Step 4: Put it All Together

The final step. You’ll practice everything you have learned by reading – and playing – full tunes!

We will work through the 4 steps focussing completely on Polkas. Then, it’s simply a matter of applying this system to each of the other tune types, from Jigs, to Reels and so on. You’ll soon see how this system works no matter what the tune type!

It really is as simple as that!

As a trad musician who could not read music, I have found it to be the most beneficial course I have ever done! I can now read music scores and play them. It’s been like finding the missing pieces of the jigsaw for me musically. Just to be able to understand what I see when looking at a piece of written music is wonderful!
